Particle-scale observation of seepage flow in granular soils using PIV and CFD

چکیده
Seepage-induced instabilities pose a challenge in many geotechnical applications. Particle-scale mechanisms govern the initiation of instability. However, current understanding is based on macro-scale perspective that draws continuum mechanics. Recent developments imaging and numerical analysis can provide particle-scale fundamental needed to develop comprehensive insight. This contribution demonstrates value combining experimental studies. The experiments consider transparent soil samples created using refractive image matching monitored by particle velocimetry (PIV). Three-dimensional pore topology extracted from series two-dimensional images imported into computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Permeability estimated three distinct approaches: flow rate, PIV- CFD-generated data. fields obtained PIV CFD are good agreement considering both rate contour plots distributions; this successful reconstruction three-dimensional structure flow-field analysis. comparison also reveals side boundary effects simulations constrained within limited region. multi-plane results characterise variance velocity with topology. Finally, fluid–particle interactions show larger angular packings.

Numerical Simulation of Seepage Flow through Dam Foundation Using Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics Method (RESEARCH NOTE)
In this paper, a mesh-free approach called smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is proposed to analyze the seepage problem in porous media. In this method, computational domain is discredited by some nodes, and there is no need for background mesh; therefore, it is a truly meshless method. The method was applied to analyze seepage flow through a concrete dam foundation. Using the SPH method, the...
متن کاملCfd Model of Bubble Driven Flow in Aluminium Reduction Cells and Validation Using Piv Measurement
This paper presents a CFD modelling study of the bubble driven hydrodynamics in aluminium reduction cells. A time-averaged (steady state) bubble driven flow model has been developed using a full scale air-water model of part of an aluminium reduction cell as a test-bed. Simulated results have been compared with experimental data taken under similar conditions using Particle Image Velocimetry (P...

15 صفحه اولParticle Image Velocimetry (PIV) for Granular Avalanches on Inclined Planes
This paper is concerned with experimental results of sand avalanches flowing down inclined plexiglass chutes with lateral confinement. Specifically we introduce the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique for granular avalanches. We discuss the differences and problems in comparison with “usual” PIV. After this, we present surface and side velocity measurements that are obtained at different...
